AISI Applauds EPA’s Reconsideration of Onerous Air Rules

The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) supports the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) decision to reconsider 31 regulations. This includes five key rules affecting the U.S. steel industry. The announcement came from EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin. AISI’s President and CEO, Kevin Dempsey, praised the decision, saying it could enhance the competitiveness of U.S. steelmakers.

AISI Supports Reconsideration of Emission Limits

AISI’s support follows years of strict and costly regulations imposed by the previous administration. These regulations set challenging emission limits for steel producers. Many of these rules focused on air emissions, and they were viewed as burdensome. Dempsey noted that these regulations threatened the steel industry and jobs. This was despite EPA’s scientific findings showing existing standards already ensured public health and environmental safety.

The reconsideration targets emission limits on integrated facilities, taconite ore processors, and coke plants. These elements are essential in steel production. AISI believes these regulations could have impacted almost every step of steelmaking, reducing international competitiveness.

EPA’s Reevaluation of Particulate Matter and Cross-State Pollution

One key area under reconsideration is particulate matter (PM2.5) standards. The last administration set strict standards that AISI argued would raise costs for steelmakers. These standards would have limited growth opportunities in the steel sector. AISI has pushed for standards that protect public health but also allow U.S. steel to thrive. The industry has made significant investments in technology, making U.S. steel production some of the cleanest worldwide.

Additionally, the reconsideration of the Cross-State Air Pollution Rule (Good Neighbor Plan) has drawn attention. This regulation would impose high costs on the steel industry. U.S. steelmakers already manage nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions under existing regulations.

The Path Forward for American Steel

AISI is optimistic about the ongoing reevaluation. The institute looks forward to working with the EPA to ensure future regulations support innovation. Reconsidering these rules will allow U.S. steel to grow, protect jobs, and remain competitive globally.
