Aluminum Dynamics LLC is advancing its domestic production footprint. It is investing over $200 million to build a recycled aluminum slab center in Lowndes County, Mississippi. This major industrial project highlights the shift toward sustainable manufacturing within the North American aluminum supply chain.

Expanding U.S. Green Aluminum Capacity

The new facility will be located within the Golden Triangle Industrial Park. It is engineered to process aluminum-bearing materials. The plant will heavily rely on used beverage cans to produce 180,000 metric tons of recycled aluminum slabs annually. Operations are scheduled to launch in the first half of 2027. The project benefits from targeted regional assistance. This includes infrastructure support for direct road and rail links managed by the Mississippi Development Authority. It also features tax incentives through the Mississippi Major Economic Impact Authority program.

Parent company Steel Dynamics Inc. (SDI) reported a $16 million second-quarter 2026 earnings reduction. This followed asset write-downs from the strategic relocation of the project from Arizona to Mississippi. The pivot followed severe community opposition and regulatory friction in Arizona. Meanwhile, in Columbus, Mississippi, SMS Group is completing the final commissioning phase for an Aluminum Dynamics greenfield flat-rolled aluminum complex. This complex is designed to supply 650,000 tons of aluminum sheet per year to the automotive and beverage packaging sectors.

Driving Sustainable Metal Procurement

The investment reinforces Mississippi’s standing as a premier hub for advanced manufacturing and domestic metal recycling. By utilizing recycled feedstocks, Aluminum Dynamics aims to curb carbon intensity. The company also wants to secure a reliable, localized supply of high-grade aluminum slabs for downstream mills. The strategic shift from the Western United States to the Southeast highlights key trends. Operational certainty and regulatory support increasingly dictate major industrial siting decisions in the metals sector.
