Australian miner Arafura Rare Earths has extended a binding supply agreement with a major wind turbine manufacturer for up to eight years. The contract secures key volumes of neodymium praseodymium oxide from the Nolans project in Australia’s Northern Territory.
Binding Offtake Terms and Index-Linked Pricing
The agreement covers up to 500 tonnes per year of NdPr oxide equivalent. The contract spans an initial five-year period, with an option to extend for three additional years. Pricing for delivered volumes will align with global seaborne pricing indices.
Arafura previously signed a supply arrangement with Germany-based manufacturer Siemens in 2023. The company has now adopted a policy of non-disclosure regarding client identities to protect commercial confidentiality.
Nolans Project Schedule and Wind Magnet Demand Surges
Arafura reached a final investment decision on the Nolans project in May. The mine expects to begin commercial production by early-to-mid 2029. Planned output includes 4,440 tonnes per year of NdPr oxide alongside mixed heavy rare earth oxides containing dysprosium and terbium.
These elements are essential for producing permanent magnets used in direct-drive wind turbines. Direct-drive generators eliminate mechanical gearboxes, significantly reducing maintenance failures in offshore environments. Demand for magnet metals in the wind sector continues to outpace growth in the electric vehicle industry.

SuperMetalPrice Commentary:
Long-term binding agreements with tier-one turbine original equipment manufacturers underscore the strategic necessity of diversifying rare earth magnet supply chains. NdPr remains the fundamental bottleneck for direct-drive offshore wind power generation.
Securing commercial price-indexed offtake commitments strengthens Arafura’s balance sheet as field development begins. It also signals that wind sector demand for heavy and light rare earth oxides is expanding rapidly alongside electric vehicle growth.
