Australia Approves $4.5 Billion Tax Incentive to Strengthen Critical Minerals Sector

New Law to Boost Lithium, Rare Earths, and Tungsten Processing

Australia has passed a major new law to boost the domestic production and refining of critical minerals. The Critical Minerals Production Tax Incentive (CMPTI), valued at A$7 billion (US$4.5 billion), aims to support Australia’s role in the clean energy transition.

Starting from July 2027, eligible projects will receive a 10% tax rebate on processing and refining costs for up to 10 years. This incentive, backed by the Australian parliament, supports 31 critical minerals identified by the federal government.

 

CMPTI Aims to Position Australia as a Global Critical Metals Powerhouse

According to Resources Minister Madeleine King, the incentive is a “game changer” for the mining and refining industry. The government also introduced a hydrogen production incentive of A$2 per kilogram for renewable hydrogen, further aligning with Australia’s green goals.

Key minerals like lithium, vanadium, tantalum, cobalt, rare earth elements, gallium, and tungsten will benefit. These metals are essential for batteries, EVs, electronics, and renewable energy systems.

Australia’s list aligns with those of key trading partners, including the US, EU, Japan, India, South Korea, and the UK. This alignment enhances Australia’s appeal to investors looking to reduce reliance on unstable global supply chains.
