Australian lithium loading volumes dropped significantly in August, with declines recorded across all major export hubs according to vessel-tracking data compiled by Argus. Total Australian port loadings fell by approximately 23 percent to roughly 286,000 tonnes, down from 372,600 tonnes in July, reflecting temporary logistics shifts and localized plant maintenance across key consumer markets.


Port-by-Port Export Declines

Shipment volumes contracted across every major Western Australian port facility during the month. Bunbury port, which handles material from Covalent Lithium’s Mt Holland operations and the Greenbushes mine, loaded around 163,000 tonnes, marking a 7.6 percent monthly decline. Meanwhile, shipments from Port Geraldton, utilized by Liontown Resources, dropped 34 percent to 39,100 tonnes.

Exports from northern and southern outlets experienced even steeper pullbacks. Volumes out of Port Hedland—used by Mineral Resources and Pilbara Minerals—fell 54 percent to roughly 34,650 tonnes. Esperance port, handling spodumene exports from Bald Hill and Mount Marion, saw volumes decrease by 20 percent to 49,250 tonnes.


Chinese Demand and Downstream Impact

The vast majority of Australian spodumene concentrate continues to be shipped directly to processing facilities in China. While downstream battery demand remains robust, spot intake slowed temporarily in August due to scheduled plant maintenance across several Chinese lithium refineries.

Industry stakeholders note that despite the monthly loading dip, underlying demand fundamentals remain intact. Strategic equity shifts, such as South Korean conglomerate Posco securing a 15 percent stake in Mount Marion alongside Ganfeng and Mineral Resources, continue to reshape long-term supply integration across the Asian battery manufacturing corridor.
