BMW’s Direct Recycling Initiative for Battery Cells

BMW Group has commissioned its Cell Recycling Competence Center (CRCC) in Salching, Lower Bavaria, to implement direct recycling of battery cells. Developed in collaboration with Encory GmbH, this process mechanically dismantles residual battery materials. Then, it feeds them directly back into production. Unlike traditional methods, the materials are not fully reverted. Instead, they are efficiently reintegrated into the cell manufacturing cycle.

The CRCC will scale the process in stages and target mid-double-digit metric tons of battery materials annually. Additionally, BMW plans to reuse recovered raw materials in pilot production at its Cell Manufacturing Competence Center (CMCC) in Parsdorf. Markus Fallböhmer, BMW’s senior vice president of battery production, says this approach optimizes cell production. Moreover, it positions BMW at the forefront of battery recycling technology.

Integration Across BMW Competence Centers

BMW consolidates battery expertise across three competence centers: the Battery Cell Competence Center (BCCC) in Munich, CMCC Parsdorf, and the CRCC in Salching. The BCCC develops next-generation high-voltage batteries in labs and small-scale production. Then, promising battery designs are scaled up at CMCC. Meanwhile, surplus material from pilot production is recycled at CRCC. This short-distance integration minimizes raw material loss and strengthens BMW’s circular economy strategy.

SuperMetalPrice Commentary:

BMW’s direct recycling initiative marks a major step toward sustainable battery production. By reintegrating materials efficiently, the company reduces dependency on raw material extraction, lowers production costs, and enhances supply chain resilience. Furthermore, as automakers face growing regulatory and consumer pressure for sustainability, BMW’s approach could set a benchmark for circular battery economies in Europe and worldwide.
