US Exempts Brazilian Pig Iron from Section 301 Tariffs
Brazilian pig iron tariff exemption

The Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) announced that it will exempt Brazilian pig iron from the new 25% Section 301 tariffs. This move provides critical relief to US steelmakers and foundries. The industry relies heavily on high-quality Brazilian imports that domestic producers cannot easily replace.

Securing Essential Metallurgical Inputs

Following public consultations, the USTR expanded its exemption list to include pig iron and ferrous scrap to maintain supply chain stability across the US economy. Integrated steelworks consume more than 95% of domestic merchant pig iron. This leaves foundries and electric arc furnace (EAF) operators reliant on foreign supply. With restricted alternative sources in Russia and Ukraine and high internal consumption in China, US manufacturers consider Brazilian pig iron a vital input.

SuperMetalPrice Commentary:

The exemption of Brazilian pig iron demonstrates the practical limits of trade protectionism when faced with critical supply chain dependencies. For US steel mills and foundries, this decision prevents a significant cost shock, though the broader bilateral trade environment remains strained.
