Steel Exports Rise in January 2025

In January 2025, French steel exports saw a significant increase of 16.9% year-on-year (y/y), reaching 158.21 thousand tons. This also marked a 24.9% rise month-on-month (m/m). The growth was driven by higher demand for both long and flat steel products.

 

Exports of Long and Flat Products

Exports of long products surged by 57.4% y/y and 2.2 times m/m, totaling 33.28 thousand tons. Flat products saw a 9.4% increase y/y and a 12.2% rise m/m, amounting to 124.93 thousand tons. Hot-rolled flat products (HS-7208) were the largest segment, growing 36.7% y/y and 19.8% m/m to 55.5 thousand tons.

 

Steel Imports Surge in January

In January 2025, France also saw a 51.8% y/y increase in steel imports, totaling 45.65 thousand tons. Long product imports rose by 32.4% y/y to 22.17 thousand tons. Flat products saw the largest increase, up 76.3% y/y, totaling 23.48 thousand tons.

 

Key Imported Steel Products

Key imported products included hot-rolled flat products (HS-7208) at 11.68 thousand tons (+13 times y/y, +6.5 times m/m) and coated flat products (HS-7210) at 6.83 thousand tons (-10.6% y/y, +7.6 times m/m). Additionally, carbon steel rods and bars (HS-7214) increased by 20.1% y/y to 6.37 thousand tons.

 

French Steel Production Increases

French steelmakers increased production by 7.6% in 2024, reaching 10.76 million tons. This recovery follows a 17.5% decline in 2023. The average monthly production in 2024 was 896.25 thousand tons, compared to 833 thousand tons in 2023.
