Lynas Rare Earths Acquires Meteoric to Expand in Brazil
Lynas Rare Earths

Lynas Rare Earths has entered into a binding agreement to acquire 100% of Meteoric Resources. The deal gives Lynas control of the Caldeira Rare Earth Project in Brazil. This acquisition expands the company’s global asset base beyond its flagship Mt Weld mine in Australia. The transaction strengthens Lynas’ position in the global rare earth supply chain outside China.

Integration of Caldeira Ionic Clay Deposit

The Caldeira deposit represents the largest known ionic clay rare earth resource outside China reported under the JORC Code. Meteoric recently completed a definitive feasibility study for the asset. Lynas will integrate Meteoric’s local Brazilian team and technical expertise into its operations. The acquisition combines Caldeira’s ionic clay potential with Lynas’ proven processing capability.

Expanding Global Rare Earth Scale Beyond China

The transaction aligns with Lynas’ Towards 2030 growth strategy to expand raw material reserves. Brazil holds the world’s largest rare earth reserves outside China. Entering Brazil offers Lynas a supportive mining jurisdiction with established infrastructure. The expansion will help Lynas meet rising global demand for heavy and light rare earth oxides.

SuperMetalPrice Commentary:

Lynas’ acquisition of Meteoric Resources marks a strategic move to consolidate high-grade ionic clay assets outside China. Ionic clay deposits are essential sources of heavy rare earths like dysprosium and terbium.

By combining Australia’s Mt Weld with Brazil’s Caldeira, Lynas builds a multi-asset supply platform. This diversification reduces geopolitical risk for Western magnet producers seeking non-Chinese raw material supply.
