Recycled-content steel producer SSAB Americas has partnered with Alter Trading and Greenbrier Companies. Together, they will establish a closed-loop supply chain to demonstrate the viability of near-zero emissions steel. Under this initiative, Greenbrier will manufacture 50 gondola railcars using SSAB Zero. This premium steel grade is produced via electric arc furnace (EAF) technology with near-zero carbon emissions. Once deployed, Alter Trading will use these specialized railcars to transport recycled steel scrap back to SSAB’s mill in Montpelier, Iowa. This creates a fully circular material loop for sustainable manufacturing.

Decarbonizing Freight and Industrial Supply Chains

The partnership targets a significant decarbonization milestone. It successfully integrates near-zero emissions steel into heavy transportation infrastructure. Greenbrier’s fabrication of the 50 gondola cars validates the performance of sustainable steel. The material easily meets the rigorous structural demands required for heavy freight applications. By replacing conventional steel with SSAB Zero, the project eliminates the reliance on carbon offsets. Instead, it focuses on documented production processes, optimized logistics, and material traceability.

Scaling the Closed-Loop Scrap Metal Economy

A critical component of this initiative is a localized, high-volume circular economy. To achieve this, St. Louis-based Alter Trading plays a vital role by sourcing and loading the recycled steel scrap. Subsequently, this scrap is shipped directly to SSAB’s EAF mill in Iowa. Furthermore, the facility operates entirely on recycled content and renewable energy. Consequently, this closed-loop value chain ensures a steady supply of high-quality raw materials. Simultaneously, it reduces scope 3 emissions associated with downstream transportation and procurement.

Advancing Sustainable Steel Procurement Trends

This collaboration reflects a broader momentum across North American manufacturing to secure transparent supply chains. Greenbrier previously partnered with U.S. Steel and Norfolk Southern in 2022 to design lighter gondolas. This highlights the rail sector’s ongoing transition toward resource efficiency. As corporate sustainability mandates tighten, verifiable circular partnerships are becoming an industry benchmark. These initiatives drive long-term structural demand for high-quality ferrous scrap and EAF-produced steel.

SuperMetalPrice Commentary:

This initiative highlights a crucial evolution in the green steel transition, moving from pilot-scale concepts to commercial, closed-loop industrial applications. By embedding near-zero emissions steel into the very logistics infrastructure that hauls its raw materials, SSAB is securing both downstream demand and upstream scrap supply. For procurement managers and industrial buyers, this project sets a clear precedent: future steel sourcing will rely heavily on verifiable, offset-free supply chains where physical material traceability is mandatory.
