Century Aluminum Company

Brimstone and Century Aluminum Company have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU). The agreement aims to build a fully integrated supply chain for US primary aluminum production. Under the deal, Brimstone will supply Century with smelter-grade alumina from its planned US facilities. This strategic partnership creates a reliable, domestic “mine to metal” pipeline. The project aims to mitigate vulnerabilities and eliminate dependence on foreign bauxite and alumina imports.

Reducing Reliance on Foreign Bauxite and Alumina Refineries

The domestic US aluminum industry faces significant structural risks. The country completely lacks economically viable bauxite deposits. This resource scarcity forces US producers to rely entirely on imported bauxite and foreign refining capacity. The global aluminum supply chain remains heavily centralized. China currently controls approximately 60% of global alumina and primary aluminum production.

This geographic concentration leaves Western manufacturing supply chains highly exposed to geopolitical disruptions and export controls. In fact, domestic smelters at present produce less than one-sixth of the aluminum consumed within the United States.

This gap highlights a critical vulnerability in national security and industrial manufacturing sectors.

Commercial Scaling and Production Timelines in Nevada

Brimstone plans to upend this market imbalance. The company will extract metallurgical alumina from non-bauxite rock quarried directly within the US. This proprietary process allows Brimstone to produce domestic alumina at a competitive price. To scale this technology, the company is developing a demonstration plant in Reno, Nevada. This facility is scheduled to begin operations in 2028.

Data from the Nevada demonstration facility will support Brimstone’s first commercial industrial-scale plant. Targeted for completion by 2034, this large-scale refinery will produce roughly 350,000 metric tons of smelter-grade alumina annually. It will serve as an anchor supply source for domestic smelters like Century Aluminum.

Century Aluminum Expands Domestic Smelting Footprint

The partnership aligns with Century Aluminum’s broader strategy to secure raw materials and expand its domestic footprint. Century has actively worked to reinforce its asset base. The company recently restarted idled production capacity at its Mt. Holly smelter in South Carolina through a $50 million investment.

Furthermore, Century Aluminum has formed a joint venture with Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA). The partners will construct a brand-new primary aluminum production plant in Inola, Oklahoma. Securing a reliable, long-term domestic supply of competitive alumina is vital. It will feed these expanding smelting operations and protect downstream US manufacturing from international market volatility.

SuperMetalPrice Commentary:

The MoU between Brimstone and Century Aluminum represents a critical structural shift in how North American procurement managers must view long-term primary aluminum sourcing. By decoupling alumina extraction from traditional bauxite-exporting nations, this initiative addresses the weakest link in the domestic aerospace and automotive supply chains. If Brimstone successfully hits its commercial scaling targets, this technology will provide a blueprint for near-shoring critical mineral processing across other metal sectors currently dominated by Chinese refining infrastructure.
