Austrian steel producer Voestalpine has received the core equipment for its new electric arc furnace at its flagship Linz facility. The delivery marks a major step forward in the company’s greentec steel decarbonization strategy.

Equipment Logistics and Installation Schedule

Logistics teams delivered key machinery components weighing 790 tonnes to the Linz site primarily via river waterways. Manufacturers in Germany, Italy, and Turkey produced the heavy equipment. On-site engineering teams are now assembling and integrating the unit with project partner Primetals Technologies.

Voestalpine is constructing electric arc furnaces at both Linz and Donawitz without interrupting existing steel production. Construction work and infrastructure commissioning will conclude by the end of 2026. Official commissioning and trial smelting will begin in the first half of 2027.

Capacity Ramp-Up and Automotive Steel Capabilities

At full operational capacity, the Linz furnace will produce approximately 1.6 million tonnes of low-carbon steel annually. The shift to electric arc processing will lower Voestalpine’s corporate carbon dioxide emissions by up to 30% by 2029. This reduction represents nearly 5% of Austria’s national carbon footprint.

Alongside furnace construction, Voestalpine is modernizing the laminar cooling line at its Linz hot rolling mill. Upgrading the cooling infrastructure enables the mill to produce specialized high-strength steel grades for European automotive manufacturers.

SuperMetalPrice Commentary:

Voestalpine’s transition toward electric arc furnace steelmaking reflects a broader structural pivot across European steel producers facing tightening emissions targets. Replacing blast furnaces with electric arc capacity will permanently alter regional raw material demand.

Demand for high-quality ferrous scrap and direct reduced iron will rise significantly as these facilities come online. Steelmakers that secure high-grade scrap streams and renewable power contracts will lead the transition toward low-emission manufacturing.
