ABB advances electrification and automation at Aitik copper mine

ABB advances electrification and automation to support Boliden’s Aitik copper mine expansion.
The project enhances water storage, recycling, and monitoring systems for safer operations.
Located in northern Sweden, Aitik is the country’s largest open-pit copper mine, critical for European supply.

Global copper demand is rising, with the International Energy Agency forecasting a 22% increase by 2035.
ABB delivered modular e-houses, switchgear, transformers, and variable speed drives for pumping stations.
These systems enable predictive maintenance, real-time diagnostics, and centralized energy management to reduce downtime.

 

Modular automation supports sustainable mining practices

ABB advances electrification and automation to promote environmental responsibility at Aitik. Moreover, the infrastructure aligns with the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management, ensuring zero-harm operations. In addition, modular, rapid-deployment designs handle sub-arctic conditions and allow quick scaling for higher production needs.

Meanwhile, ABB’s System 800xA distributed control platform centralizes supervision across tailings and energy systems. Furthermore, Björn Jonsson highlighted that the approach increases operational efficiency without compromising safety. Also, collaboration with Epiroc on underground trolley solutions further strengthens automation capabilities in mining.
