Greyparrot 2025 Recycling Trends: Efficiency on the Rise

Greyparrot’s 2025 Recycling Trend Report shows significant improvements in sorting efficiency across global facilities. Its Analyzer units, deployed at 65 facilities in over 20 countries, processed 52 billion items and analyzed 1.24 million metric tons of recyclable material. Of that, only 103,000 tons were lost on residue lines. These results underscore recycling’s critical role in reducing CO2 emissions and supporting circularity.

The report highlights growing PET and HDPE recovery. Facilities processed 8.3 billion PET bottles, two billion more than in 2024, thanks to Greyparrot’s expanded global coverage. Meanwhile, average recoverable plastic per Analyzer dropped from 3,000 tons in 2024 to 2,500 tons in 2025, showing that facilities are adapting to increased plastic volumes more efficiently.

However, recovery performance remains inconsistent across materials. While some facilities captured 95% of clear PET, colored PET recovery fell to 15%. The report emphasizes that granular Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) regulations are essential to align recovery rates with policy incentives.

 

Greyparrot Insights: Residue Trends and Circular Opportunities

Residue streams reveal evolving material dynamics. Metal content rose from 2.5% to 4.3%, partly due to increasing electronic scrap volumes and battery risks. Glass residue remained low at just over 1%, while fiber proportion fell by 3.5%, reflecting more plastics and metals entering the stream. Greyparrot notes that despite higher recovery, recyclable material on residue lines increased from 49.4% to 53%, indicating ongoing losses to landfill and incineration.

Design improvements and automation drive further efficiency. Data from Greyparrot’s Deepnest platform shows that simple changes, like removing label sleeves, can triple recovery rates for bottles. Policies such as EPR and PPWR create incentives for circular packaging design, encouraging brands and producers to optimize materials for real-world sorting.
